Elihu Preaches The Gospel

In Chapter 33 of Job after Job's other 3 friends have all had their say, Job contended that he was righteous in his own eyes. Elihu, younger than the others was hesitant to speak up, but when the others remain silent he feels he has no choice.

Job 33:8-13 ESV
"Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. You say, 'I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.' "Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. Why do you contend against him, saying, 'He will answer none of man's words'?

Elihu tells Job flat out that he's wrong. That his suffering is not because God counts him as His enemy and points him to God's eternal perspective "God is greater than man." Elihu isn't engaging with Job in the same way the others have been. He's not asking hypotheticals or speculating. Elihu, is laying down the truth. 

Job 33:14-22 ESV
For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. "Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death.

Elihu describes the condition of the fallen man. You and I, everyone before they came to Christ for salvation.  He starts with the way the Father draws us to Him. Through our subconscious and dreams, and through conviction against sins. He describes man meeting death and yet...

Job 33:23-24 ESV - 
If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, and he is merciful to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom;

A ransom. To deliver the dying from going down to the pit. Jesus Christ is that ransom.  What happens to the one who is ransomed?

Job 33:25-28 ESV - 
let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor'; then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. He sings before men and says: 'I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.'

He is saved. Elihu is describing that all have sinned and the wages of sin is death (going down to the pit). But that man prays to God, God accepts him, he shouts for joy, and God restores to him righteousness. Then the man turns around and declares to others what God has done for him. Now that he has been saved from the pit, his life going forward is looking at the light. All because there was a ransom found.

This is the gospel of Jesus Christ, in my opinion, plainly stated like a Billy Graham sermon.

Here's the kicker though. Job is one of the oldest books in the Bible. Job was likely a contemporary with Abraham or even before him.  
600 years before the law of Moses, 
1000 years before David sang Psalm 22, 
1300 years before Isaiah prophesied of the suffering servant, 
around 2000 years before Jesus, 
there was Elihu, preaching the gospel of salvation in the ransom for our sins Jesus Christ.

Job 33:29-33 ESV
"Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."

God does all these things.
1 - Justification
2- Sanctification
3 - Glorification
Three times, with a man.
