Treasures of Heaven
Daniel JusticeShare
Matthew 6:19-21 - Jesus teaches about storing treasures in heaven: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." This implies that the treasures of heaven are imperishable and eternal, focusing on spiritual wealth over earthly possessions.
The primary treasure of heaven is often considered to be eternal life itself. This is seen in passages like John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
The New Testament speaks of various crowns or rewards:
Crown of Life (James 1:12, Revelation 2:10) for those who persevere under trial.
Crown of Righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8) for those who long for Christ's appearing.
Crown of Glory (1 Peter 5:4) for faithful shepherds of God's flock.
Incorruptible Crown (1 Corinthians 9:25) for those who exercise self-control in all things.
1 Peter 1:3-4 describes an inheritance that is "imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you." This inheritance represents the eternal blessings believers will receive.
One of the greatest treasures is the promise of being with God, as stated in Revelation 21:3-4, where God will dwell with His people, wiping away every tear, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.
In Matthew 5:3-12, Jesus describes those who are "blessed" with qualities like being poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness' sake. These blessings or "treasures" are spiritual in nature, rewarding a godly life with divine favor.
The overall concept in the Bible is that the treasures of heaven are not tangible earthly goods but rather spiritual, moral, and eternal rewards for living a life aligned with God's will, characterized by faith, love, obedience, and service to others. These treasures are secure, lasting, and infinitely more valuable than any material wealth.
