John MacArthur: A life serving God’s Kingdom

John Fullerton MacArthur Jr., a towering figure in evangelical Christianity, passed into the presence of his Savior on July 14, 2025, at the age of 86, following a battle with pneumonia. Born on June 19, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, to Irene Dockendorf MacArthur and John F. MacArthur Sr., a Baptist pastor and evangelist, John was the heir to a rich legacy of faith that stretched back generations. His life was marked by an unwavering commitment to the exposition of Scripture, a passion that defined his 56-year tenure as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, where he began serving in 1969. A graduate of Talbot Theological Seminary, MacArthur transformed Grace Community Church into one of the largest Protestant congregations in Los Angeles, filling its 3,500-seat auditorium to capacity with his verse-by-verse preaching. His ministry extended far beyond the pulpit through Grace to You, a media ministry he founded in 1969, which distributed his sermons—over 3,000 in total—via radio, television, and digital platforms, reaching millions worldwide. As president of The Master’s University and The Master’s Seminary, institutions he helped establish in 1985 and 1986, respectively, MacArthur shaped generations of pastors and scholars with his commitment to biblical inerrancy and expository preaching. His prolific writing career included nearly 400 books and study guides, most notably *The MacArthur Study Bible*, which sold over one million copies and earned a Gold Medallion Book Award. Known for his unflinching stance on theological truth, MacArthur was both revered and controversial, standing firm against cultural trends and championing Reformed theology while addressing issues like church discipline and biblical authority. Despite health challenges in recent years, including heart surgeries and lung procedures in 2023 and 2024, MacArthur remained steadfast in his calling, preaching his final sermon in November 2024. His resilience was evident in his April 2025 rebuttal to death rumors, quoting Mark Twain: “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Yet, his health declined, and he contracted pneumonia in July 2025, leading to his hospitalization and eventual homegoing. MacArthur is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Patricia, their four children—Matt, Marcy, Mark, and Melinda—15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. His legacy endures through the countless lives touched by his teaching, the institutions he built, and the global reach of his ministry. To the bereaved, take heart: John MacArthur’s faith has become sight, and he now rests in the eternal presence of the Savior he served so faithfully. As believers, we hold fast to the promise of Psalm 116:15, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Though we mourn his absence, we rejoice in the assurance that we will see Brother MacArthur again in glory, united in the everlasting fellowship of Christ’s kingdom, where the Word he preached will echo for eternity.
